HALO 22 is a work conceived by artist Emilio Ferro. It is a sculpture composed of a metal base and an upper glass structure that projects a beam of light onto the wall in front of it.
The light beam, through a mechanism of lenses guided by an algorithm, creates an optical illusion that generates constantly changing shapes and effects: a solar halo, a living process in continuous evolution.
The installation explores and celebrates the atmospheric phenomenon of the 22° Halo, a rare moment when a circular halo embraces the sun. This occurs when the sky, at an altitude of 6,000-12,000 meters, is covered by cirrus clouds, stratified clouds containing tiny ice crystals.
Sunlight, refracted by these countless crystals in every direction and at an angle of 22°, splits into its basic colors, giving life to the solar ring. The inspiration comes from the artist’s observation of this phenomenon. The halo, appearing before his eyes for a brief and mystical instant, is brought back to life in the installation, captivating and drawing the observer toward it.
